In other news: BroadwayWorld Seattle released their annual theatre award nominations a while back and I garnered seven nominations for last season. (It helps to be way overbooked, you're eventually going to do something right.) Take a moment to check out the nominees over at BroadwayWorldSeattle.com and if you were a fan of any of my nominated work this last year please take a moment to vote. Thanks.

As you may have noticed. The site is currently more or less blank. That's because it is currently undergoing a complete overhaul to deliver a more streamlined experience which is also optimized for mobile devices. Hope to be back up and running soon.
Wow. I haven't been very good about keeping up with the blog here have I? I'll work on that.
I just wanted to write a quick post to explain why I've removed the perusal copies of some of my plays from the site. Basically it comes down to quality. I had some scripts up for perusal that I began writing when I was 18, and while they are interesting in a "look at what this kid wrote" way, I don't feel they are indicative of the current style or quality of my work, and have decided to pull them from the site. The links to the synopses are still there and if you really want to read them please feel free to email me and I'll send you a copy, but for now, the only scripts available will be those that have been produced, or that I feel are more representative of my current work. I am hoping to get my new adaptation of Romeo and Juliet up soon. (For clarification: not "Breaking Light," this is a direct adaptation of Shakespeare.) Production plans for the adaptation had to be scrapped/ postponed due to money issues, but I'm hoping they will be revived sometime in the next year with myself remaining attached in the title role. That's all for now. I'll try and be better about keeping the site and blog updated. - Nic We are so incredibly excited and honored to be able to help inaugurate the beautiful new Dukesbay Theater with our 2013 season of fringe theatre in Tacoma. The Shape of Things is a perfect kick-off as it dives us into themes of love, art, and cruelty, which we will be looking at through the eyes of three wonderful playwrights this year. I hope you enjoy this dark romantic “comedy,” and ask yourself… how far would you go for love?
SYLVIA by A.R. Gurney opens tonight at Tacoma Little Theatre and kicks off my year as Resident lighting designer. Sylvia is a fun show helmed by Elliot Weiner (directed me in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde last year) with a strong cast. As for the now official resident lighting gig, which I've known about for a while but been really good about not announcing to the world until it was all official on paper, it is a huge boost to my design career and an exciting step for TLT as they move on into the future. TLT has not had a resident designer in recent memory and I'm really looking forward to being the guinea pig for this new position. I've enjoyed working on Sylvia and am already on my way to a plot for Nightwatch (the second show of the season.) The craziest part of this new job is that together with the two shows I have already committed to at Lakewood Playhouse I suddenly have 10, yes you read that correctly TEN, lighting gigs for the 2012-2013 season. Let's just say I will be going through a lot of pencils and graph paper over the next 12 months. As for my availability for acting, the one downside of so much design work is that I will not have the same open availability to book acting gigs that I normally like around this time of year. I've been weighing my options between maybe taking some smaller parts, to getting back to film work (something I've been wanting to do anyway), to just saying what the hell and double booking wherever possible, to trying to stay sane and maybe focusing on lighting... as if that'll happen. Point is, it'll be a full year one way or another, how full remains to be seen. Every year, Tacoma News Tribune theatre reviewer Alec Clayton picks his "Best-of-the-South-Sound". This year, together with local reviewer Michael Dresdner they have created an online listing of their favorities. Multiple productions I have been involved with this year as either an actor or lighting designer have been recognized and I want to take a brief moment to extend my congratulations to my co-workers and the productions which were honored:
Best Musical: "The Who's Tommy" at Centerstage, Directed and Musical Direction by David Duvall (Shared with TMP's excellent production of The Color Purple.) Best Drama: "Someone Who'll Watch Over Me" at TLT, directed by Doug Kerr. And best dramatic ensemble for the fine work by the cast. Best Choreography: For "Oliver" at Lakewood Playhouse, directed and choreographed by Casi Wilkerson. Also best up-and-coming actor to Coleman Hagerman who had a breakout year. Best Musical Direction: David Duvall for his work at Centerstage (I'll include Tommy even though it was left out by Mr. Dresdner, who did not see the production, in his listing.) Alan Bryce of Centerstage was named best artistic director of the year. And finally, congratulations to John Munn for his well deserved accolades as Best Director of the Year for "The Farnsworth Invention" (Shared with Doug for "Someone Who'll Watch Over Me" and my good friend Brie Yost for her production of "Zoo Story") I am very proud to have worked with all these talented individuals and on so many marvelous productions during the past season. You should check out the entire list of honorees as there are a lot of really good productions I didn't list here, just because I wasn't involved. And please continue to support live theatre. For the full article: http://alecclayton.blogspot.com/2012/08/critics-choice.html This Sunday at 2 pm is your one and only chance to see Bethany Bevier and I perform A.R. Gurney's "Love Letters" at Lakewood Playhouse. The production has been running since early August with 9 different couples each performing Gurney's play on a different night. I had the good fortune to see Alex Smith and Jen Davis' opening night reading and enjoyed it very much. You can read a review of that performance right here: Alec Clayton Blog But come Sunday... it will be over; Bethany and I will be the closing performance. Don't miss your chance to see this lovely play, starring the lovely me, and the lovely Bethany at 2PM this Sunday, August 26th, at Lakewood Playhouse. Check out the video preview below for Bethany and I's performance of A.R. Gurney's "Love Letters" August 26th at Lakewood Playhouse. Exciting News: I've just been added, along with Bethany Bevier, to the lineup for Lakewood Playhouse's special summer presentation of A.R. Gurney's "Love Letters."
Bethany and I will be closing the show with the final performance on August 26th at 2pm. I'm a big fan of the script after performing the first act in my college days and have been itching to do the entire piece ever since. The story is told through a series of letters between Andrew Makepeace Ladd III (my character) and Mellissa Gardener, from their early years of birthday party invites, up through their time at boarding school and on into their adult lives. The presentation is done by two actors seated at a table reading from the script. Gurney claims that the show can be performed with no director, rehearsal, or tech and simply presented on the night as a reader's piece. Oddly enough, in this one instance the playwright is absolutely right. The letters he has written are so profound and moving that they really do allow for the bare bones approach he suggests. Lakewood's presentation will be unique as they are bringing in nine different couples who will each perform the play a single time. I'm honored that Bethany and I have been included and look forward to closing the show with a bang. The schedule is as follows: Friday, August 10th at 8:00pm: Jen Davis & Alex Smith Saturday, August 11th at 8:00pm: Jen Ankrum & Blake York Sunday, August 12th at 2:00pm: Sharry O’Hare & Micheal O’Hara Friday, August 17th at 8:00pm: Stephanie & Jarod Nace Saturday, August 18th at 8:00pm: Terri & Robert Puett Sunday, August 19th at 2:00pm: Aya & Randy Clark Friday, August 24th at 8:00pm: Samantha Camp & Bruce Story Saturday, August 25th at 8:00pm: Rachel & Alan Wilkie Sunday, August 26th at 2:00pm: Bethany Bevier & Niclas R. Olson If you cannot make it to my performance on the 26th, I highly recommend seeing one of the other couples perform this incredible play. Critics and Audience Members are Raving about |
