God of Vengeance
by Sholem Asch
in a new version by Niclas Olson
This 1907 Yiddish drama about a Jewish brothel owner who attempts to become respectable, and ready his daughter for marriage, by commissioning a Torah scroll to cleanse his house premiered on Broadway in 1923. Unbeknownst to the brothel owner, his young daughter is engaged in a love affair with one of his prostitues. The Broadway run, translated into English, was cut short after the entire cast, along with the producer and one of the owners of the theater were arrested, and ultimately convicted, on charges of obscenity.
