We Were Gods Once
by Niclas Olson
Alderius was the young son of a minor lord on the fictional Greek Island of Myrenia, when it was conquered by a Persian army and their vicious leader Merticles. Now years later, after the death of his mother and younger sister in a raid, Alderius is charged by the goddess Athena to lead her people to freedom. Banding with the other disenfranchised nobles, led by the charismatic and jealous Licentius, and Cassandra, a former slave, Alderius leads his people on an epic quest to free their land and reclaim their former glory.

The island of Myrenia. The past.
We Were Gods Once is the first culmination of my incessant obsession with both epic morality tales and the Greek gods. I started the script when I was only eighteen, (and it really shows, which is why there is not a downloadable copy to be found on this site) however it has occasionally sparked a small desire to go back and take another stab at Alderius' story. Oddly enough the script does contain one of my favorite characters I've ever written, a slave, Cassandra, who joins the rebellion and has a wonderful arc from beaten and scared to finally the strong image of victory that ends the story. It was really in writing her that I first began to understand how to write a character that changes over time, and acts rather than tells the audience what she wants. I keep it up, at least to some extent, on the website because this was also the first truly feature length screenplay I ever finished and it gives me a benchmark to show how far I've come. I'm sure eventually it will disappear the way other stories have as I upload more work, but for now I like to keep it here as a personal reminder of the epic stories of my youth. - Niclas Olson
